Claude Code can keep file writes inside your working directory

Claude Code v2.1.314 added a setting called permissions.blockWritesOutsideWorkingDirectories. With it on, Write, Edit and NotebookEdit refuse paths outside the working directories. That holds in every permission mode, including the permissive ones.

The release also adds idle compaction to VS Code and the Code tab in Claude Desktop. A conversation over 200K tokens that sits idle gets summarized. The Claude Agent SDK v0.2.175 bundles the same CLI version.

Permission modes loosen as you trust a session more. This setting draws a line that stays put when the mode changes. The notes name three file tools only, so test shell commands before relying on it. The skill that grows is setting your agent's blast radius in config, not in the prompt.

Turn the setting on in any repo where you let the agent run with fewer approvals.

  1. Update Claude Code to v2.1.314, or the Agent SDK to v0.2.175.
  2. Enable permissions.blockWritesOutsideWorkingDirectories in your Claude Code settings.
  3. Ask Claude to create a scratch file in a folder outside the working directory.
  4. Confirm Write refuses the path. Then repeat the request in your most permissive mode.
